Georgia police officer dies while in pursuit

Police in DeKalb County reported the death of a police officer who was killed in a wreck while he pursued a motorist who was driving a stolen car. According to officials, the officer had pulled the motorist over during a traffic stop. The driver fled the scene after the officer took his information and headed back to his patrol car. The officer pursued the suspect for a short distance until the chase was aborted. Shortly thereafter, he was notified that the man was spotted in the area and he resumed his chase, only to strike a tree with his vehicle.

The 27-year-old driver turned himself in to investigators at his Stone Mountain home. He faces felony murder charges as well as theft by receiving a motor vehicle and reckless driving. When the officer first stopped him, he was driving a red Jeep Cherokee that was stolen from Henry County. According to reports, the car was later found in Rockdale County.

The officer who was killed in the automobile accident had been with the DeKalb County Police Department since autumn of 2012 and was a recent graduate of the police academy. The 32-year-old was a father of two children and had worked in the East Precinct. The accident remains under investigation.
