Police believe drag race led to fatal car crash that killed woman

On Behalf of | Jul 24, 2014 | Wrongful Death

For drivers in Rome, a motor vehicle accident is an inconvenience as long as no one is hurt. However, when there is a significant amount of recklessness, negligence and wanton disregard for the safety of others, there is a substantial chance for injuries or a fatal car crash to occur. Any car wreck can cause damage, but if it results in a fatality, the family of the person who was killed will have to deal with the loss of a loved one and the knowledge that it didn’t have to happen.

A 50-year-old mother of eight was killed when her car was hit by another car driven by a 43-year-old man who police believe was drag racing another vehicle. The woman was waiting to make a left turn when the fatal car crash occurred. According to her daughters, she was heading to the grocery store at the time of the accident. The intersection where the crash happened doesn’t have a stop light. The man who was allegedly drag racing was arrested and faces a slew of charges including first degree vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. The driver of the vehicle he was racing left the scene. Police are searching for the car and its driver.

It’s never easy when a loved one dies unexpectedly, but when it happens because of the negligence of another, it’s especially hard to take. With a fatal car crash, it’s important that the circumstances be fully investigated to determine exactly what happened and who’s at fault. The aftermath of the accident isn’t limited to the family coping with the loss of a loved one. There could be bills to pay, lost wages and lost companionship. Insurance companies are focused mainly on their bottom line, so a key is to understand how to deal with them and move forward with litigation.

In this incident, eight people are without their mother due to what police believe was a man’s decision to drag race in a busy area. Because of their loss, the family needs to keep all their legal options open. To gather information on how to file a wrongful death case, their first step should be to contact a legal professional experienced in fatal motor vehicle accidents to discuss how to move forward in pursuing a lawsuit.
