Georgia crane truck accident kills man, truck driver arrested

On Behalf of | Jun 4, 2014 | Truck Accidents

Learning that your loved one has died in a truck accident is a horrible experience. When that accident was caused by a driver’s negligence, the pain may be all the more severe. For one Georgia man’s family, that horror became a reality when their loved one was killed in a crane truck accident.

The truck accident happened as the truck driver was making a left turn, and the crane truck overturned. The 28-year-old man who was killed was the passenger in the truck at the time of the accident. He was pinned beneath the vehicle after it turned over. According to investigators, he was wearing a seat belt. The deputy coroner pronounced the man dead at the scene of the accident.

An autopsy was performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab, showing that he died of positional asphyxiation. His family now has to deal with knowing that he wasn’t instantly killed and likely suffered in the accident prior to passing away.

Although the May 14 crash was initially thought to be the result of mechanical failure, the driver has since been arrested on criminal charges. Officials charged the man with driving too fast for conditions, failure to stop at a stop sign and homicide by vehicle.

A criminal investigation in the wake of a fatal auto accident may bolster any civil claim brought by the grieving family. Experienced legal counsel is necessary in these cases to build the strongest possible case against a wrongdoer. Even if a driver is convicted of a vehicular homicide or manslaughter, the family of the victim can seek to hold the driver fully accountable through a wrongful death lawsuit.
