How can GA residents drive safely this winter?

On Behalf of | Dec 16, 2016 | Car accidents

Winter weather is at best a pain for drivers in Georgia, and a dangerous factor for serious accidents at worst. It may significantly help to know how to drive defensively in adverse weather. If you have inexperienced teenage drivers, you may also want to take some time to teach them how to drive in poor weather and stay safe.

According to Esurance, the top dangers you may face this winter are ice and poor visibility. Freezing rain, snow whiteouts and fog are major culprits in creating these conditions. An especially dangerous type of ice is black ice, which usually forms overnight when water on the road freezes. You might be likely to encounter black ice on bridges, under overpasses and in spots of the road that do not get much sunlight.

When the road is slippery or when it is foggy, rainy or snowy, the top rule to remember while driving is to slow down. You will want to give other vehicles plenty of room to maneuver and to come to a stop. Be sure to use your turn signal, to be patient and to watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists, who are difficult to see in adverse weather.

You may also want to remember that many other drivers will continue to drive at regular speeds despite the weather, especially if they have a false sense of security about their all-weather tires. These tires are meant to function well in various weather conditions, but do not provide complete traction as some drivers erroneously believe. Being careful and vigilant this winter may not prevent all accidents, but might significantly reduce your chances of being in a serious crash.
