Taking a look at drowsy driving

On Behalf of | Dec 30, 2016 | Car accidents

Each year, a shocking number of lives are claimed as a result of drunk driving, speeding and other dangerous behaviors that reckless drivers exhibit while behind the wheel. However, drowsy driving is another major auto accident risk and some people do not realize how serious this problem actually is. In Rome, and across the rest of Georgia, drowsy driving significantly increases the likelihood of an accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates show that one out of every 25 drivers who are over the age of 18 admit to falling asleep while operating a motor vehicle in the past month. It is also estimated that during 2013, 800 people lost their lives, 44,000 were hurt and 72,000 accidents occurred because of drowsy driving.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration published information that can help drivers avoid driving while fatigued. Not only should drivers make sure they get a sufficient amount of sleep, but they should also avoid medications that make them drowsy, take naps when necessary and even eat healthier to improve the quality of their sleep. Moreover, all drivers should realize the signs of drowsy driving, which include blurry vision and yawning.

After a drowsy driving collision, victims may struggle with severe injuries that cause problems for the rest of their lives. Sadly, these crashes also result in the loss of life, leaving families with emotional pain that will never go away. As a result, those who are responsible for a motor vehicle crash that was caused by drowsy driving cannot get away with their actions.
