Responding appropriately if you are the victim of a hit and run

On Behalf of | Jun 23, 2019 | Car accidents

Hit and runs can happen when you are inside of your vehicle or nowhere in sight. However, discovering that the driver who hit you is avoiding responsibility for the damage he or she caused, can be frustrating and demoralizing. At Cromartie Law, we are committed to helping people in Georgia who have been victims of hit and run accidents.

If you were inside your vehicle when you were hit, the first thing to do is to make sure that you and your passengers are okay. If any of you require medical assistance, make that your first priority. According to State Farm Insurance, do your best to gather as much information as you can as quickly as possible in relation to the other vehicle. Some of the details to look for include the following:

  • A license plate number.
  • The location of the accident and which direction the other driver fled in.
  • The color, make and model of the other vehicle, as well as information about where that vehicle may be damaged.

Under no circumstance, should you ever try to follow the vehicle that hit you because you never know if they have a loaded weapon or could be concealing something that could put your own life at risk.

In some cases, you may be able to contact nearby businesses and ask if they have security cameras that may have caught the incident on video. This information can be incredibly useful to investigators as they work to identify who hit your vehicle. When you are aware of how to act after you have been hit and the other driver has fled, you can make wise decisions that will not compromise your safety.
