Distracted driving leads to fatality in Georgia

On Behalf of | May 7, 2020 | Car accidents

Distracted driving is dangerous. No matter how many times it gets said, somebody still takes chances they shouldn’t — and other people can pay the price.

Police say that a 20-year-old Douglasville native caused a fatal accident while distracted by his cellphone. The resulting accident claimed the life of a 22-year-old Lithia Springs woman and injured her young child.

According to police, the young man who caused the wreck was so caught up in his phone that he ended up crossing the center line in the road and rammed head-on into the victim’s car. The driver who caused the accident has now been charged with failure to maintain their lane, failure to use due care while driving, reckless driving and felony vehicular homicide.

While cellphones are a distinct problem when it comes to modern distracted driving, all kinds of other distractions can divert a driver’s attention from the road. They include things like:

  • Eating lunch, including checking orders while in motion and unwrapping sandwiches
  • Drinking beverages, which can suddenly spill and create an even bigger distraction
  • Getting lost in thought or lost in conversation with your passengers
  • Fishing around a purse, briefcase, bag or under your seat for an item that you want or need
  • Playing with the radio to find a better song or get traffic conditions
  • Programing a guidance system while you’re in motion or looking at the map as you drive
  • Arguing with a passenger or trying to discipline your children while you’re in motion

Distracted driving accidents are entirely preventable — but only if everyone does their part. If you suspect that a distracted driver caused your wreck and injuries, find out what it takes to get fair compensation for your losses.
