Jury sought for Michael Jackson wrongful death suit

On Behalf of | Apr 19, 2013 | Wrongful Death

Georgia residents may have heard that the jury selection process for the wrongful death lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson’s mother against an entertainment agency has 35 potential jurors so far. The wrongful death claim started with a pool of 180 potential jurors, but less than three dozen have the required time to sit on the jury. The trial is expected to last several months.

Katherine Jackson is suing AEG Live, a concert promoter, stating that the company failed to properly screen the doctor who was treating the international pop star at the time of his death in June 2009. The doctor, Conrad Murray, was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

AEG is denying the claims, stating they are not responsible for hiring the doctor who took care of Jackson and administered the fatal dose of propofol to him on the day of his death. The lawsuit seeks damages of $40 billion; however, a jury will ultimately determine the amount of damages if the suit is successful.

Potential jurors are required to complete a 24-page questionnaire. The questions assess a potential juror’s knowledge about AEG Live, Michael Jackson and his family. The questionnaire will be used to select as impartial a jury as possible so that both sides of the case will be heard fairly.

A wrongful death suit can be a painful and emotionally charged experience for all involved, so it is important to have a qualified personal injury attorney involved during the process. The attorney may help surviving family members navigate through the legal process as well as help them potentially attain a settlement that is fair and will financially compensate them for the loss of a loved one.
