Former NBA star involved in fatal crash

On Behalf of | Jun 7, 2013 | Car accidents

Mookie Blaylock, a former Atlanta Hawks player, was involved in a head-on car crash in Clayton County that left a female driver dead. Blaylock, along with a passenger in the other vehicle, were injured in an auto accident when the former NBA star allegedly crossed the center median and into oncoming traffic. It is unclear why Blaylock lost control of his vehicle.

The 46-year-old Blaylock was driving an Escalade north on Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro at the time of the crash. His vehicle struck a car and injured the 40-year-old female passenger and a male driver who were in that vehicle. The woman died at the hospital some time later, while Blaylock was flown to Atlanta Medical Center and placed on life support. The male driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured.

Blaylock’s condition improved overnight and he was removed from life support. He remains in critical condition although doctors have said he is stable. The former basketball player has been under treatment for seizures, but no one knows if this contributed to or caused the crash. He also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a DUI charge, but police do not believe alcohol was involved in this crash. The Georgia State Patrol’s accident reconstruction team has been asked to assist with recreating the circumstances of the crash.

A victim who has been injured in a car crash may be entitled to collect money from the at-fault driver to pay for medical costs, lost wages, living expenses and sums for pain and suffering. The family of a victim who dies in a car accident may also be entitled to collect damages. A personal injury attorney may represent the victim of a crash or the family of a deceased victim.
