Bullet ricochet injures one, kills another

On Behalf of | Aug 21, 2014 | Wrongful Death

Firearms, regardless of whether or not they are legal, are extremely dangerous. Of course, not all firearms are involved in horrific accidents. There are a large number of sporting activities that involved guns and, for the most part, are participated in safely and without incident. However, the weapons’ inherent danger unfortunately can present itself with terrible consequences, as a recent fatal accident shows.

A man is facing involuntary manslaughter charges after an accidental shooting left a woman dead. The gun owner was visiting a North Georgia town when his gun accidentally discharged, striking him in the hand. The bullet traveled through his hand, ricocheted off the sidewalk, and traveled across the street striking the woman, who was visiting from Texas, in the side. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Regardless if the gun owner was legally carrying his weapon or not, the man could face a wrongful death suit because of the incident. The victim’s family could file a wrongful death claim against the man, seeking compensation for the terrible loss they have suffered. This compensation can take the form of many things, including medical bills, funeral expenses, loss of earnings and more.

Gun ownership is a privilege that comes bundled with a list of responsibilities. Deviating from acceptable gun use, even accidentally, can leave one open to liability both civilly and criminally. Although nothing can replace a loved one, those involved in these types of horrible accidents may want to have an attorney assist them in fighting for compensation in hopes of making the path toward normalcy less stressful.
