Examining the frequency and types of elder abuse

On Behalf of | Apr 24, 2015 | Nursing Home Neglect

The rights and wellbeing of senior citizens is an important issue that should be made more prominent as to expose any wrongdoing. Nursing home abuse, in particular, is a primary target to address, simply because so many people rely on these facilities as they get older. But just how prevalent is elder abuse?

According to the Georgia Division of Aging Services, elder abuse is one of the most underreported issues in America. There are potentially millions of victims who suffer some type of elder abuse each year, but don’t report the problem. As a result, there is no way to know the exact statistics for sure. And elder abuse can consist of more than just physical abuse. An elderly person or other at-risk adult could also suffer from financial abuse, emotional abuse or even sexual abuse. The warning signs can sometimes be hard to see, but if a Georgia resident notices that their elderly relative has bruises that can’t be explained or financial charges that seem suspicious, more investigation may be warranted.

Nursing home staff members are charged with caring for dozens of residents who may have no choice but to reside in an assisted living arrangement. Some of the elderly residents may have medical issues that need to be closely monitored. Others might have problems completing day-to-day tasks to take care of themselves due to their advanced age. Negligence in this type of situation can lead to injuries – or worse.

If a Georgia resident begins to suspect that their elderly relative is suffering from some type of abuse in a nursing home, legal action may be an option. A lawsuit based on nursing home neglect or abuse could result not only in financial compensation, but also in major changes at the targeted facility.
