Semi driver seriously injured in collision with pickup truck

| Mar 20, 2014 | Truck Accidents

A recent crash on a Georgia interstate involving two vehicles resulted in three injuries, one of them serious. According to Fulton County Police, at about 5:15 p.m. on March 14 a pickup truck traveling on Interstate 85 lost control and slammed into a semi traveling in the same direction. The collision happened just after the Senoia Road exit, and the impact sent both vehicles toward the shoulder of the highway. The big rig hit the guardrail and a bridge pillar, and then its trailer separated from the cab and flipped over.

The tractor-trailer driver was ejected and later taken to Atlanta Medical Center in critical condition. First responders took the two people in the pickup with minor injuries to Grady Memorial Hospital. Car accidents like this can happen in the blink of an eye. An investigation may determine the cause to be alcohol, drugs, excessive speed or distracted driving.

When smaller vehicles whip in and out of traffic or cut in front of a tractor-trailer, the larger vehicle is unable to stop quickly to avoid a collision. The semi driver may be put at risk of injury or death.

Although speeding or distracted driving may be misdemeanors, if drugs or alcohol were found to be factors in the accident, the pickup driver could face felony charges. If the case goes to trial, the plaintiff’s lawyer could argue that the semi driver was injured because of someone else’s carelessness. In a personal injury lawsuit, the lawyer could build a case for collecting monetary damages to compensate for the semi driver’s medical bills and lost wages.
