Does wearing a helmet make a difference in a motorcycle accident?

On Behalf of | Apr 16, 2015 | Motorcycle Accidents

Many residents of North Georgia will likely take full advantage of the pleasant spring weather by getting their motorcycles out, getting them prepped and taking them out for a ride. There is almost no better way for Georgia residents to know that spring has finally arrived than when they hear the roar of a motorcycle heading down the street.

Most motorcyclists take great care to ensure than their motorcycles are in good riding condition — and looking good too. The majority of our readers probably know that most motorcycle safety organizations recommend that motorcyclists wear protective clothing, as well as recommending the use of a helmet. But, does a helmet really make that big of a difference in a motorcycle accident?

The organization known as the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety has taken a look at certain statistics, and the results may be surprising for our readers. According to the statistics, wearing the proper helmet can be a 69 percent effective way of preventing brain injuries. The right helmet can also be 42 percent effective in preventing death in a motorcycle crash.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, head injuries are one of the leading causes of death in America. Although many other states leave the decision to the motorcyclist as to whether or not to wear a helmet, in Georgia all riders and passengers are required by law to wear the appropriate headgear.

Nevertheless, even the most safety-conscious of motorcyclists can be struck by another driver who failed to meet his or her responsibility to drive reasonably under the circumstances. In these situations, motorcyclists should explore whether they have the ability to pursue legal action against the driver that hit them, causing their injuries.
