Here are four common car-bike accidents cyclists can avoid

If you are a road rider, you understand the value of being prepared for surprise situations that could be dangerous to your health.

Here are four common accidents waiting to happen for the unsuspecting cyclist, and ways to avoid them.

1. The driver turns right

A motorist may pass you on the left, then make a right-hand turn in front of you. The problem is that the driver misjudges your speed. To avoid a potential crash, ride in the traffic lane. The driver will have to stay behind you until the turn comes up.

2. The driver turns left

An oncoming driver may not see you. Even if an object such as a traffic sign does not block you from view, remember that a motorist typically looks for cars, not bicycles. Be alert as you approach an intersection. To avoid the collision, be prepared to make a right-hand turn so that you are going in the same direction as the car. It may be a close call, but you will have avoided a crash.

3. The driver opens the car door

Do not ride close to a line of parked cars. A driver who wants to get out of a car will probably not see you, and if he opens the door, you may have no option but to hit it. Again, ride in the traffic lane; you will be much safer.

4. The driver rear-ends you

Being hit from behind may be one of your worst fears because this is an accident you do not see coming. Be sure your bicycle has a flashing LED taillight, and wear bright clothing that will help motorists to see you better.

Dealing with the aftermath

Anyone can become the victim of a traffic accident; it is just easier for cyclists who are extremely vulnerable and have no protective steel shell as motorists do. Head injuries are common, a fact that makes a strong case for wearing a helmet. Wear colorful, protective gear and remain alert at all times as a cyclist so you can avoid collisions and arrive at your destination safely.
