3 tips to avoid autumn bike crashes with dangerous drivers

On Behalf of | Sep 25, 2020 | Pedestrian accidents

As autumn arrives, it’s a good time to talk about how to avoid crashes when you’re riding your bike. Drivers often think of fall as the time of year when fewer people ride their bikes. The weather starts to cool down, schools are back in session and people are busy with work. Tourism drops, and fewer people are outside enjoying time off.

Despite that, you may still ride your bike often. If you do, you need to know how to avoid a serious crash with a vehicle on the road. Here are a few tips for what to do in a season when drivers may not be looking out for you.

1. Ride at the right time of day

While you might not get much choice on when to ride, the best way to ride a bike safely is to ride at times of the day when drivers aren’t out and about. For example, avoid rush hour traffic or riding when school has just let out for the day. If you ride when there are fewer vehicles on the roads, you’ll reduce your risk of injury.

2. Use lighting and bells to draw attention

As the days grow shorter, you might find that it’s getting darker sooner than you expected. Use lights on your bicycle to make yourself more obvious to others. You can also have a bell or horn installed on your bicycle so that you can alert others to your presence more easily.

3. Use bike lanes when you can

Finally, if you can, use bike lanes instead of the main roadway. Drivers are more likely to be aware of cyclists in bike lanes. They’re apt to slow down and simply pay more attention in those areas.

These are three tips to help you stay visible and safe during the fall. Riding is a lot of fun and good exercise, but you should always be safe. If you are involved in an accident, find out more about the possibility of compensation for your losses.
